Springfield Technology Park – Armory Building 104 and Site Improvements

Springfield, MA

In the 1940s, Springfield Armory’s new state-of-the-art Building 104 held a critical role in WWII, for it was here that large capacity production of the M1 Garand Rifle took place. Over the many years since, the Armory was converted to a high-tech business park which housed companies such as Digital Equipment and Springboard Technologies.

In 2014, the remaining historic Building 104 of the Springfield Technology Park was set for demolition and conversion into marketable business space, parking, and the newest Phoenix Charter Academy.  Western was selected for the Building 104 enclosure along with the site improvements, and took over the site following demolition. Western’s scope of work included enclosing the two building ends – left exposed by demolition of the center portion – and re-building a historically accurate façade to include interpretive panels depicting the perspective of passersby looking through the windows onto the manufacturing floor at the height of Building 104’s manufacturing days. Western was also selected for the Phoenix Charter Academy project at the site.

Western is proud to have been a part of this renovation, which preserved the historic significance of the building while repurposing it for new local businesses.
