American International College - Lissa and 1067 buildings

Springfield, MA

Client: American International College (AIC)
Scope of Work: General Contracting Interior fit-out, lab reconstruction, roof replacement
Project Type: Renovation

Western Builders was proud to partner with American International College on the urgent redevelopment of their health sciences facilities following a devastating fire that destroyed the Courniotes Building and its critical nursing labs. The loss of these teaching spaces posed a serious threat to AIC’s nursing program, student retention, and accreditation.

Working closely with Phase Zero Design, our team executed a comprehensive renovation and fit-out of the adjacent Lissa Building, which sustained heavy smoke damage. All drywall, insulation, and finishes were removed to prepare for a full reconfiguration of the space. The newly restored facility includes:

  • Four exam rooms simulating hospital environments

  • A skills lab with nine hospital beds and 13 patient simulators

  • Control rooms, offices, restrooms, and a student lounge

  • A debrief room designed to enhance instruction and student learning

In tandem with this interior work, Western Builders delivered a complete roof replacement on the fire-damaged Courniotes Building, protecting the structure and allowing for future use.

The Gross Anatomy Lab—a cornerstone of AIC’s curriculum—was fast-tracked and reopened in time for the Spring 2024 semester on January 17, with the remaining program areas completed just after Spring Break on March 13.

This project exemplifies Western Builders’ ability to respond rapidly to urgent institutional needs while maintaining high standards of construction, coordination, and care.
