Live 155 / WayFinders

Northampton, MA

Located at 155 Pleasant Street, LIVE 155 was originally occupied by the Northampton Lodge, a neglected and decaying housing complex, that sat right at the gateway of downtown. As part of an overall community revitalization initiative, the building was purchased to be transformed by Wayfinders housing agency. While located in an affluent urban area where housing costs are high, the redeveloped LIVE 155 apartments would reflect a new model of blending, rather than segregating, income levels — built on the belief that all residents benefit from a sense of shared community and relatability.

Wayfinders temporarily relocated existing tenants to neighboring facilities while Western Builders commenced demolition and construction at the three-quarter acre downtown site. While working on this tight urban site entailed much complexity, Northampton officials trusted the longstanding reputation and credibility of Western Builders.

The new, modern 58,000 sq ft LIVE 155 building provides mixed use for the community, with retail/commercial space at ground level and apartments above. Designed to feature an abundance of natural light and scenic views of the Holyoke Range, the $12 million building features 70 studio and one-bedroom units that serve both market-rate and subsidized tenants. Driven by a local gas moratorium, the electric-based building is also designed to be highly energy efficient, with rain screen siding, a high-grade building envelope for air tightness, energy recovery ventilators, and a PV solar array installed on the roof.

Today, LIVE 155 apartment complex is now a symbol of revitalization and vibrancy for the town. Western Builders is once again proud to work with Wayfinders in their mission to provide affordable housing, as both companies are committed to the western Massachusetts community and equitable housing opportunities.
